RILEY Family History
This famous surname can be either English or Irish. It is found in both countries in several and overlapping spellings including Riley, Ryley, Reily, Reely and Reilly, as well as the pure Gaelic McReilly, O'Reilly and O'Ralilly. It has two possible and quite distinct origins. In England the surname is usually locational, from the village of Riley Green near Blackburn or possibly Riley Hill, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire. Various publications also mention a place called Riley in Devonshire, but if such a place ever existed, that no longer seems to be the case. The meaning of the name is probably "Rye Farm" from the Olde English pre 7th century "rygh - leah", but other translations are possible such as Reed Farm...Select Audience

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am trying to find out why John Riley left Ireland. He married Mary Brannan in England. I am trying to establish why one of his children, my grandfather Mark, changed his name to Armstrong. I have not found out yet if he was christened Armstrong or changed it. Mark Armstrong was killed on the Somme in 1916 but his son Mark Armstrong arrived in Australia during the depression.
I really would like to know why John left, however, if possible. Understandably, this may be an impossible ask.

My tree involves a confusion of Rileys. One I am sure of was Joseph Riley who married Hannah Odell in Guilford County, North Carolina, 1819. They subsequently moved west to Ohio, possibly, and then to Indiana, where Joseph died about 1838. Hannah raised a large family of Riley kids, somewhere between 10 and 13 children. One of the potential Riley associates of Joseph back in North Carolina was a William, who was said in the History of Henry County, Indiana (1884) to have immigrated to Guilford County, N.C. from Germany. Can anyone shed light on Rileys coming from Germany in the 1780s or so?

Seven generations back, my ancestor Samuel Eakin (1760-1851) married Mary Nancy Riley/Reilly (1774-1821) in 1794 in Ireland. She was born in Straid Townland, Banagher Parish, Tirkeeran Portion. They left for the U.S. in 1796 and settled in Venango Co, Pennsylvania. Thatโs all the information I have on her. They had a son also Samuel Eakin (1807-1888) who married a Margaret Ferguson Campbell (1808-1876) from Ireland.

My known Reilly Ancestors were Bridget Reilly born around 1814, she was a twin . Her parents were Johanna Landers and Jeremiah or Derby Reilly. She was married to a Daniel Kenney. For.my understanding and research the both passed in the work house after she had a set of twins in 1851 and Daniel passed in 1849. One twin survived and became a famine orphan ans was sent to the US and later adopted a s be ame Michael Sullivan. My 3 x great granfather was also thie son and at the age of 13 after parents passed jumped on a boat for 7 years??
