QUIGLEY Family History
Recorded in a number of spelling forms including O'Quigley, Quigley, Kegley, and Cogley, this is an Irish surname of ancient origins. It derives from the 12th century Gaelic O'Coigligh, a nickname for an untidy person, or possibly one with long, flowing, hair. Most Irish surnames originate from a nickname, this nickname being given in ancient times to the leader of the emerging clan. The "O" suffix has been lost since the early 19th century, in common with many other surnames, and is rarely seen now. The clan originates from the far west of the county in County Mayo, and although there is some evidence of them being dispersed in the 16th century, its main residential area remains in Donegal and Sligo...Who have we missed?

I don't think I have any famous Quigley's in my History. All I know is that my Quigley's came from Ireland and went to England and then to Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. They were all coal miners. I can only go back a few generations. I was not raised in Pittsburgh but in Texas. If there is anyone famous I have no clue. I don't know too much about my Quigley people. But, I would love to know something. Sincerely, Kimberly Quigley-Bates
Would like to connect with family members from Sligo. Grandfather is Frank Quigley. He had 8 children in America, Katherine, John, Beatrice, Claire, Frances, William, Frank Jr., Anne. His wife was Beatrice. With deaths in the family we have lost contact information.
Lots of Quigleys in Will County Illinois who began coming to the US from Tipperary during the Great Famine.Andrew Wilmington Quigley was among the first: he had 11 children. His children likewise had many children. Not famous, but very large tribe in Wilton Township area and beyond! Lots moved to Joliet Illinois to get "off the farm" so to speak. Just starting to research them.
My 2nd great grandfather who arrived first was likely James, his wife Margaret whose surname is unknown. Their children were Michael, Margaret, Joseph, Ellen, Charley, Mary, James and Doroty (probably meant to be Doroty, but died at sea.
I do not believe that these Quigley ancestors were famous. Some became famous after arriving in America.
All in Texas
Thomas Quigley 1958, Bryan Quigley 1984, Mehgan Quigley 1991, Piper Quigley 2016, Connor Quigley 2017
My family came to Scotland around 1855. 2 sons that I know of. One lived in Greenock and the other in Glasgow before he joined his brother in Greenock. My 4x granddad went missing around 1872. Leaving a wife and children. Behind
Our Imigrant originally came from Dublin then moved to Cork married had two sons then moved to the United States in 1846. I am looking forward to someday before I die finding out exactly where they lived. I hope to see it one day. I thought Ireland was so beautiful. Flying in to Dublin just gave me goosbumps.
My Quigley family is spread all over the US. Texas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Wisconsin, etc. I had 35 first cousins although the number has dwindled as they had children.
