MANNING Family History
Recorded as Manning and the patronymic Mannings, this is an English surname but one of pre 7th century Norse Viking origins. According to the famous Victorian etymologist Canon Charles Bardsley writing in the year 1880, it derives from 'maningi,' a word which translates as valiant or strong. The name is preserved in such towns as Manningford or Manningtree. This seems to be the correct interpretation and this would seem to be confirmed by one of the earliest recordings of Henry Maninge of Cambridgeshire, in the Hundred Rolls of land owners of that county in 1273. Other early examples of the surname recordings taken from surviving church registers of the diocese of Greater London include: the christening of Johan, the daughter of Launcelot Manning, on January 14th 1564, at St...Select Audience

Hello John Manning. I am from Newcastle also. My Manning ancestors came to Ireland from England as part of the English settlement of Ireland and had Corbalis Castle at Ruthdrum , Dublin. It is there that many were Catholized and my Great Great Grandmother came To Australia in the 1850's under the Earl Grey scheme after her father and Mother passed.
Manning
My great great grandfather was William Manning, who was born in county Cork in 1837. He came to the US at the age of 16 (approximately), and was the cabin boy on admiral Perryโs expedition to Japan. He fought in the civil war, Spanish American war, and recommissioned at the age of 81 to assist preparing ships for WW 1. We are not able to find his parents / history of his family in Ireland. Any assistance is greatly appreciated !!!
