DONOHUE Family History
This name is one of the most important and numerous of Irish surname. It derives form the Gaelic compound "Donn" meaning brown plus "cath" meaning battle and was applied to a "descendant of Downcha", Downcha being a personal name. The surname O Donnchadha is found under the variant Anglicised forms of O' Donoghue, O' Donohue, Donohue, Donaghy and Donahue. The O' Donoghues constituted an important sept in Kerry and associated parts of Cork in the ancient area known as Desmond. I'm interested in finding my Donohue ancestor who would have come to St. Louis from Ireland, possibly from Cork, possibly at the turn of the 19th Century. John or Jno Donohue may be his name, although we have some Matthews in our family as well.

I think my Donohue Family came from Cork. Ancestry.com says most of my Irish relatives are from the Munster region.

My father told me that the first Donahues came to America at the time of the Pilgrims. I know little to nothing about my ancestors both fraternal & maternal sides ... just that I am 100% Irish. My father's name was Lawrence A. Donahue - born 8/19/1912 in New York. He married my mother Grace J. Behan - born 5/22/1917 in New York. They got married 8/25/1940 in New York. My fraternal grandfather was Charles Donahue married to Elizabeth Howe. I know he had brothers and possibly sisters. I was told that one of the brothers lived in Australia. They were from the Ring of Kerry area in Ireland. My maternal grandfather's name was Laurence Patrick Behan born - ? In Lukin Ireland on a Dairy farm ... I believe that he was one of 17 children. He married my grandmother Mary Dunphy - born? In Waterford, Ireland to John Dunphy the Proprietor & skilled Blacksmith on Balley Bricken Road, Waterford. My maternal great-mother - Anne Dwyer? (I am told) gave birth to my grandmother - Mary Dunphy, in International waters (Atlantic Ocean ) on a return voyage from the USA to Ireland. My knowledge of my ancestors both Donahue & Behan is sadly very minimal. My name is Elizabeth A. Donahue married to Donald M. Warner. We have a son named Shane M. Warner & daughter Tara E. Warner.

It is a very old name which appears in the 5th century Roman inscriptions as Dumnovellaunos in Brittany meaning โDeep Valourโ equivalent to Irish Domhnaill. But how could this be? O Donnchadha is a great Irish name. The sept relevant for Tangara would be that of Cinel Laoghaire, whose original patrimony lay in West Cork. However, a great part of them were driven from there by the McCarthys and O Mahonys into Kerry, where they divided into two famous branches 1 the O Donohues of Loch Lein O Donohue More and those of Glenflesk O Donohue of the Glen. Together they ruled the lands about Killarney, known as Eoghanacht Ui Donnchadha. I would hazard a guess that would be a good starting point, as the bride was an O Callaghan O Ceallachain, a Cork and Kerry name.

My grandfather, Patrick J. Donohue was born in 1856 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Dennis Donohue born 1826 in Ireland and Honora Anne Callaghan born 1831 in Ireland. I have not been able to find any information on where they are from in Ireland, why they left Ireland, or when they came to Canada. Any help would be appreciated. Tangara
